Castello di Neive, Piedmont

Forget the hype surrounding the ’97 vintage in Italy for, in the North at least, wines of greater complexity and more classic structure were produced, and this wine is no exception. The colour of Tawny Port and a nose rather like a recently polished, old oak sideboard, used for storing Turkish Delight. Brooding tannins and puckering acidity patrol around the complex and elegant palate of Rosewater, Treacle and stewed Prunes. The bold and the local might tackle this wine now with rich offal stews and hard bitter cheeses but the rest of us can wait a few more years while it develops.

The Castello di Neive estate

Situated in one of Italy's most picturesque hilltop villages, the castle has played an important part in the development of the region's most famous varietal - Nebbiolo, since 1857 when, in its cellars, famed French oenologist, Louis Oudart began to transform the sweet, unstructured wines of the time into the distinctive, dry style often viewed today as the Burgundy of Italy.  Castello di Neive's Barbarescos are unbendingly traditional, rich but refined, austere and aristocratic. They also produce a delicious vintage Metodo Classico and Arneis Passito to top and tail dinner.
